VISIT TO THE CHURCH OF AGIOS GEORGIOS TERATSIOTIS
From our park, at a distance of 500 meters, you will find a unique church called Agios Georgios Teratsiotis. The architectural style of the church is a single-aisled plan with an octagonal dome, and it dates back to the Middle Byzantine period (10th to 12th century). The walls of the church are constructed with stone, and the interior contains wall paintings, although most of them are in a damaged state.
In the surrounding area of the church, there is an extensive archaeological necropolis that dates back to the Cypro-Archaic period (750-600 BCE). Archaeological excavations have unearthed numerous ancient tombs, although only one of them remained intact, revealing clay vessels from that era.
According to tradition, the name "Teratsiotis" associated with Agios Georgios is linked to a miracle. During the saint's feast day, among the faithful, there was a young wealthy girl wearing a golden necklace. At some point, the necklace fell from her neck, and despite continuous searching by herself and her family, they were unable to locate it. The girl then sought help from Agios Georgios to find it. One night, the saint appeared to her and instructed her to return to the church to pray. He pointed out the exact spot where the jewel was found: embedded in the trunk of one of the many carob trees (known as "teratsies" in Greek) in the vicinity of the church. Since then, this particular church of Agios Georgios became known as "Teratsiotis."
